LIMITED PRODUCTION UNDERWAY
The AKFX wagons started life as the SGMX wagon of the SAR.
They were produced in the time of the standardardization project
Designed to carry long steel products, pipes, poles etc.
In the AN era a dedicated steel traffic was introduced for BHP and these wagons were converted to AKFX, . This involved removing doors to reduce tare and also make loading easier.
When National rail came into being the wagons were recoded RKFX
All wagons were repainted into the AN green scheme and many are still in the original colour, which is hidden by years of collected road grime.
